Frequently Asked Questions Q: What options are available for me to improve my smile? A: The options are many. Depending on the complexity of the problem, alternatives include the mild reshaping of teeth, bleaching, cosmetic fillings, porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns and, of course, orthodontics (braces) or any combination of these. Q: What is a good age for me to bring my child to the dentist? A: Most would agree that the proper age for a child's first dental visit is getting younger. Depending on the child, of course, a good age is about 18 months. The child sits on the parent's lap, allowing (we hope) a quick "look-see" by the dentist to ascertain if there are any serious problems. This also permits the child to become familiar with the office and staff in a pleasant and comfortable way, and routine, six-month dental visits usually follow, with a confident and relaxed child. Q: What if I'm a nervous patient? A: Sedation is always helpful, as are painless injections of local anesthesia (Novocain, etc.). However, taking time with a patient, thoughtfully explaining procedures and being gentle are probably the best tools to relax the apprehensive patient. Q: Do implants really work? A: The success rate of implants is remarkably high - about 90%. Although not all patients are candidates for implants, in the hands of the experienced implant team (composed of the implant surgeon and the restorative dentist), implants have proven to be a uniquely valuable means of restoring a patient's confidence, comfort, function, and appearance. Q: Are there any sites I can visit to learn more about dental procedures and general oral health care? A: There are several very good sites that can help to explain many aspects of dental care. Among the ones we like best are: |
